It’s raining outside when Charles hears the familiar ring of his doorbell. He untangles himself from the blankets surrounding him; pulling himself off the worn-out rocking chair he’d been curled up on, joints cracking as he stretches out lazily and takes one last look at the floor length window in front him — a display of dark clouds and abrupt flashes of lightning.

The Ferrari driver makes his way towards the door. Who was out there at this hour anyway? It was literally the dead of night, not to mention how hard it was thundering outside. They should be happy that Charles was even awake right now.

Long fingers pull the sleeves of his sweatshirt down, a sudden chill settling in him now that he wasn’t covered up in the various different quilts he’d placed on top of himself. The doorbell rings again, shifting him into motion as he pushes his glasses up before finally grasping the cold handle.

“Cahlos.”

“Sharles.”

The other man is slouched over in the hallway, hair and clothes soaking wet, leaving no doubt he’d been stupid enough to walk the ten minute distance between their buildings without an umbrella or raincoat of any sort.

“Cahlos! Idiota! What are you doing, come inside right now!” Charles tugs at him hurriedly, “Go wait in the bathroom while I bring you a new set of clothes!”

“Sharl-“

“I swear to god if you say anything, but ‘yes, Charles' to me right now, I will tape your mouth closed and rid you of those clothes myself.”

“Kinky.”

“Cahlos!”

“Okay. Okay. Cálmate, I am going, I am going.”

“Good,” Charles huffs, hands on his hips as he watches Carlos walk towards the bathroom, only moving away when he sees his teammate turn the knob. The green-eyed man picks through the fresh laundry on the sofa next to him, fingers pinching and caressing different fabrics as he tries to find something soft and warm for his unexpected guest. A beige pair of sweats make the cut, and Charles stumbles over to the bathroom, knocking at the door and handing Carlos the clothes when a hand reaches out.

“Gracias,” A sliver of light escaping behind him as he steps out.

“You do not need to thank me, you buffoon! You would have frozen to death if I hadn’t given you anything!”

“Sharles,” large hands reaching out to grip his waist.

“Cahlos,” his own trailing down to settle over the ones touching him, “Why are you here?”

“I did it Sharles. I signed the contract.”

“Oh, mon amour,” and suddenly, Charles is just as quick as the lightning outside — dragging Carlos towards the spacious chair he had been residing on, spreading his legs as he hauls the other onto his lap. The driver cuddles him close, feels the shiver that racks up the doe-eyed man’s body.

Carlos’ burly fingers tangle themselves into Charles’ hair, hand tightening as he loses himself into the warmth he’s pressed up against.

“You'll do so well, Cahlos. You’ll bring that team back to the top, mon amour.”

WIP Wednesday!

Hiiiiiii y'all and Happy Valentine's Day aka Singles Awareness Day to all who celebrate! I have...a DISGUSTINGLY early wake-up call set for the morning, so if you're reading this shortly after it posts, know that I am 100% asleep and probably wandering through the White House Gardens in my dreams, where FSOTUS and Prince Henry are totally making out beneath a linden tree in the moonlight and I'm swooning from afar. For my WIP Wednesday this week, I would like to offer up the very beginning of Chapter 2, aka the follow-up chapter to At the End of a Bar, a fic I wrote and released in a single day last week when I was feeling particularly worn out by my job and I wanted nothing more than to write Alex as equally worn out (though he encounters a certain mysterious blond who takes his mind off of things immediately).

Impossible to judge. Perhaps the Mary Celeste. I like a bit of mystery.

I have several jossed wwdits fics that would have been so fun if i’d got them out before certain events. But now, I just don’t think they have the same vibe. Like, you could still enjoy them, but because we know what happens next, it kinda detracts from the overall experience.

16.) What are your writing strengths?

I’m pretty good at aping someone else’s style, I try to maintain strong character voices, I’m funny and people tend to like the ideas I have.

17.) What are your writing weaknesses?

If I’m tired of a fic (not necessarily of the fic itself, but of writing it) I often do the bare minimum. Fuck you (marry me) strikes me as an example. People seemed to really like that fic and there were only one or two chapters left, but I had very little motivation to write. The final chapter was written essentially by pushing through until I’d finished it, and certain things I’d tried hard to do in the beginning (e.g. give harrow’s narration a very distinct and obvious voice) fell by the wayside in favour of getting it over with. https://archiveofourown.org/works/50096647

I also often publish barely edited fic for the same reason.

18.) Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fics?

Like it, will do it depending on POV. If the perspective character understands the language, i might write it in English for ease of comprehension. If they don’t, i might write it as is. I would usually put translations in the notes, but I don’t think I’ve actually had occasion to do it so far.

19.) First fandom you wrote for?

On AO3, Be More Chill in 2018. I will not link that, I refuse. (It’s on my page, but it’s archive locked.) In life, i think i was writing self-insert discworld fanfiction around the age of nine or ten.

20.) Favorite fic you've written?

In terms of execution, I think part of everything alive again. https://archiveofourown.org/works/48395794 It was the first time I’d ever written something as part of an event, and the first time I ever got art for my fic - how gorgeous is it, by the way??? I wrote it all without external input (I normally publish at least somewhat as I go, but for BRE, we posted it all at once on one day) and I am so proud of myself for getting it done to a level I’m proud of. But not very many people read it, I think partly because it’s a chunky beast to try and get through all at once. So when it comes to the reader response, I’d say my melini cultural history museum series https://archiveofourown.org/series/4190293. So many people have commented on that and for such short pieces, it’s a lot of positive feedback relative to the effort I put into them. But besides my shameful 2018/19 fic, I honestly love everything I’ve put on ao3.

Oh I'd be happy to talk more about my lovely pirates along with the sirens!

So first off here's kind of how they (sirens, mermaids, etc.) work:

Sirens – charismatic/loving magic users who died at sea; now have golden eyes, scales, and webbed hands/feet, can walk on land and are fast swimmers

Wraiths – dead magic users that were selfish, become a shade of their former selves that feed off other magic user’s life force

Mermaids – corrupt magic users that died at sea, only goal is to drown others and feed on their flesh, can’t leave the water but can use magic

Selkies – mermaids that have gone without feeding on human’s flesh, looking more like aquatic sea animals, much more vicious than mermaids and can get out of the water

Magic is inherently linked to one's soul so that's why these only really occur if the person is a magic user. None of them age as well, but they can be killed by usual means. I also want to come up with some concepts for vampires and ghosts to exist as well!

In terms of named characters, both Taliesin (the first mate) and Loreley (Carlisle's sister) are sirens! I'll go a little more in-depth with them below under the read more, along with the rest of the crew!

Taliesin (first mate/quartermaster)

Human siren male

He grew up in a port town with a love for people and is extremely charismatic. His favorite thing to do is to hype people up and compliment them on things they may not realize themselves.

His parents owned a magic store and he took over once they retired.

He also likes to give people tarot card readings and is really good at telling them what they want to hear, but also still being true and believing in the cards.

One day a noble took a liking to him, but only really used him for his magic.

The noble then drowned him, but Taliesin came back as a siren and proceeded to "haunt" the noble, before eventually fleeing.

He spent the next 100 years or so traveling and trying to make people feel good about themselves, though always felt a hole for something greater.

Carlisle eventually comes across him (asking for a reading) and after hearing his story, asks for him to join his crew.

Since then, every once in a while, Carlisle will ask for a reading and to check in with him to see how he's doing mentally.

Da'len (cook)

Nonbinary Diatan (oldest of the group, in their 40s)

They worked for the Empirical Navy for some time until their ship was attacked by pirates.

They were offered a place on the ship and took it as the cook.

For several years they sailed with this crew, even attacking other Empirical ships (one that even employed Carlisle's father)

A rival pirate crew attacked them one time and killed the captain (who Da'len actually had a romantic relationship with)

Lost, they stumbled around from crew to crew for a while, before accidentally coming across Carlisle's parents tavern

They and Sebastian (Carlisle's dad) talked about what's happened within the last 15 years and Sebastian talks about his son gathering a crew

Da'len reaches out and Carlisle absolutely brings them aboard.

Kaylie (medic)

Female smallkin

She grew up in the capital of Syldonia and later joined the crownsguard.

She's traveled all over the realm and watched as the so called "peaceful" Empirical troops commit atrocities, especially those against magic users.

She later defected and went AWOL for a few years, spending time in places most affected by the regime.

She opened a small clinic specifically for prosecuted magic users running from the empire.

It was later discovered and she had to run again.

At one point, she came across Taliesin, who had gotten injured from a reading gone wrong.

Taliesin explained he was trying to get funds to help outfit the Bloody Vagabond offered her a position (which she took).

Hazel and Hawthorn (rigger/gunner)

Half air elemental, half animalfolk (raven) female and male (respectively)

The two grew up in the streets and had to learn to adapt (unsure/planned what happened to their parents)

Hawthorn was the charm and good with people while Hazel was more adept at stealing/pickpocketing

Both of them use magic pretty regularly

They would almost always get caught, imprisoned, escape, and then move on to the next town.

In the middle of an escape, they run into Carlisle who was also running from guards, and he offers them a job

Still kinda working on their backstory and want to give them some more stuff.

So there's a running theme with these people and WHY Carlisle specifically asks them to join his crew: they all have a story. Because that's why Carlisle is a pirate in the first place. It would be boring to JUST be a sailor or even a smuggler. Although yes it'll be revealed the kind of ugly side to that mindset.

Designed by the Directorate of Naval Design (DND) of the Indian Navy and built by CSL, a Public Sector Shipyard under the Ministry of Navigation (MoS), the aircraft carrier was named after its illustrious predecessor, India's first aircraft carrier to play a vital role in the 1971 war. Coinciding with the celebrations to commemorate the 75th anniversary of India's independence 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav', the reincarnation of Vikrant is a true testimony to the country's zeal and fervor in the search for capacity to increase maritime safety.

The 262-meter-long aircraft carrier has a total displacement of about 45,000 tons, much larger and more advanced than its predecessor. The ship is powered by four gas turbines totaling 88 MW of power and has a maximum speed of 28 knots. Built at a total cost of about Rs. 20,000 Crs (US$252MI), the project progressed in three phases of a contract between MoD and CSL, concluded in May 2007, December 2014 and October 2019, respectively. The ship's keel was "beated" in February 2009, followed by launch in August 2013. With about 76% of local technology, Vikrant is a perfect example of the country's search for "Aatma Nirbhar Bharat" and provides a boost to the Indian government's 'Make in India'.

The Vikrant was built with a high degree of automation for machine operation, navigation and survivability, and is designed to accommodate a variety of fixed-wing and rotary aircraft. The ship is capable of operating an air wing composed of 30 aircraft composed of MIG-29K fighters, Kamov-31, MH-60R multifunction helicopters, as well as advanced light helicopters (ALH) and domestically manufactured light combat aircraft. Using a new mode of operation for aircraft launch known as STOBAR (Short Take-Off but Arrested Landing), the IAC is equipped with a "ramp" for launching aircraft and a set of 'retention cables' for their recovery on board.

The ship has a large number of locally manufactured equipment and machines, involving the main industrial companies in the country. The efforts also led to the development of auxiliary industries, as well as the generation of employment opportunities and reinforcement of the return effect on the economy.

A major offshoot of this is the development and production of treated steel, for use on warships through a partnership between the Navy, DRDO and the Steel Authority of India (SAIL), which allowed the country to become self-sufficient with respect to the steel used on the ship. Today all the warships that are being built in the country are being manufactured with 100% local steel.

Several design iterations, including the use of 3D Virtual Reality models and advanced engineering software, have been used by the Naval Design Directorate to shape the design of the aircraft carrier. CSL has also updated its shipbuilding infrastructure, as well as improving productivity skills during ship construction.

The delivery of Vikrant was marked by the signing of acceptance documents on behalf of the Indian Navy by the Designated Commander of Vikrant, representatives of the Naval Headquarters and the Warship Supervision Team (Kochi), and by the President and Administrative Director on behalf of Cochin Shipyard Ltd., in the presence of senior officers of the Indian Navy and Cochin Shipyard.

Vikrant was delivered to the Indian Navy by CSL after extensive user acceptance tests carried out between August 2, 2021 and July 20, 2022, during which the ship's performance, including hull, main propulsion, auxiliary equipment, aviation facilities, weapons and sensors, as well as the maintenance and maneuvering capabilities at sea, proved satisfactory according to the test protocols and system parameters.

The delivery of Vikrant is the culmination of a long phase of design, construction and testing, during which the Indian Navy and CSL had to overcome a multitude of unprecedented technical and logistical challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the altered geopolitical scenario. The successful delivery of the Indian aircraft carrier, in addition to an important activity and a historic event, testifies to the dedicated efforts of a large number of stakeholders in the Indian Navy, shipyard, industry, OEMs and M SMEs for more than two decades.

The aircraft carrier will soon be commissioned into the Indian Navy as Indian Naval Ship (INS) Vikrant, which will strengthen India's position in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) by consolidating the Indian Navy as a local and global leader.

Legend of The Duskgloom Sea: The Black Pearl Islands

⛴ Welcome aboard the Silent. I assume this small one is yours?

⚙️ HEY! I’M NOT SMALL!

⛴ That would be a yes. Since it’s clear that you’re also headed for the Black Pearl Islands, allow me as one of Captain Caviar’s First Mates to show you the ropes of this vessel. In order to shove off, the crew needs their rations. 15 Stamina Jellies from your inventory should do. Once we supply the food onboard, we’ll be ready to set sail.

Navigation

⛴ Navigating the Duskgloom Sea ain’t an easy task-

⚙️ -but the user interface is SUPER friendly. Just double-click on a highlighted square with those yellow arrows to move forward! The crew will do the rest.

⛴ As you move, the Silent has a limited durability before we need to return back to port. Moving through open seas will inflict 100 HP of damage, but moving through a whirlpool will inflict 200 damage. We can’t navigate through the rocky reefs, lest we beach the ship entirely. Encountering other sailors lost at sea can provide a bonus for you, although some are best left as they are when they’re too far of a detour.

If you wanna repair the ship, we’ll usually need to find supplies using 4,500 Black Pearl Coins which you’ll find throughout these islands to patch a few leaks and restore 1,200 HP on the Silent, but who knows? Maybe you’ll find someone that’ll do it for free. Once your durability goes too low and you try to sail your way out, and we’ll need to turn back and that’s the end of your voyage. If you wanna head back sooner, click that “Drop Anchor” button on the lower-left and we’ll head back to count our cargo.

Battles

⛴ So, you claim to be a champion in battle? We’ll test that claim and then some. Hostile forces like those from dry land will line some of these islands in a simple two wave encounter. Best them all, and you win the battle with a bit of extra loot. If you lose too many times or attempt to retreat, those forces, real or not, will put a sizable hole in the ship for *500 damage.

*If you are facing the final boss at the end of the archipelago instead, admitting defeat will destroy the Silent instantly and end your voyage right then and there.

These battle scenarios come in Normal and Master flavors, but don’t provide a power level for either one. Obviously, the Master level is much harder and requires tact with a generous amount of luck, but the Black Pearl Coins and Sailing EXP you get are somewhere higher towards being doubled. There are some… conditions to mention first.

⛴ Anyone who’s braved the fabled Giant Icing Ridge in the Dark Cacao Kingdom can survive this just as well, and we will run extra training drills for every Cookie aboard to ensure their preparedness for the battle ahead on the high seas. Unfortunately, the curse of the Duskgloom Sea renders your bonds from dry land all for naught, and the stormy seas will render your Gnomish Technology, Toppings, and even your Relics too soggy to work their magic.

To gain additional buffs here to fill the difference, you’ll need to find an Altar where you can unlock a bonus effect for your team. Higher-level effects require Black Pearl Coins to unlock, and you can swap the entire list for 750 Black Pearl Coins up to 3 times per shrine. You can only buy one buff per shrine, and these effects will vanish alongside your Black Pearl Coins after your voyage ends.

Finishing your voyage while you still have Black Pearl Coins will add them to your score alongside any additional applicable bonuses. Higher scores will place you in a higher rank which yields better rewards at the end of the season.

Hidden behind the red haze, however, are massive foes on the lone islands that align the rocky gates of the Black Pearl Islands: Boss Islands. Unlike regular islands, the bosses that inhabit these islands will actively block your path and won’t let you go around. There’s only one way to go: fight and best the boss to advance. Every other combat condition applies, but do mind that they are all immune to stun and other similar forceful movement and immobilizing effects, and that they might have an additional augment to them.

Minigames

⛴ We’ve all seen ‘em. Those little games in the much bigger games, like that one game where a battleship tries to shell some folks off a teeterin’ island surrounded by squids while they fight to be the last one standing. There are two such minigames you’ll encounter: Creepy Treasure Island and Shocking Stormy Sea. The better you do in these games, the bigger the haul of Black Pearl Coins you’ll win on top of your base loot. If you lose too much or pull back, you’ll snag something that’ll deal 500 damage to the Silent instead. The Cookie you choose won’t affect anything in the game.

In Creepy Treasure Island, you’ll go back to Cookie Run’s roots with a slightly top-down platformer level. No abilities. Just Coins. Use the Jump and Slide buttons to kebab and weave through the reefs and shells while collecting both regular Coins and Black Pearl Coins. You also have an Energy bar which drains passively as you run. Collide with something, and you’ll lose a bit of Energy, but you can restore some with occasionally-appearing Energy Potions. If you run out of Energy before finishing, or finish with less than the required Black Pearl Coins, you lose. Make it to the end of the level with enough Black Pearl Coins, and you win the game with whatever you got plus a base bonus.

In Shocking Stormy Sea, you’ll be running around on the Silent’s deck collecting Black Pearl Coins and dodging lightning. Use the virtual joystick on the left to move around, and the Dash button on the right to dash forward through any coins and out of the way of any lightning strikes… if done correctly. Get caught in the highlighted circular impact zones, and you’ll take lightning damage aside from the passive Energy drainage. If you run out of Energy, you lose. Outlast the timer, and you win the game and your Coins.

Mysterious Chests

⛴ Rumors also tell of mysterious chests like this one on isolated islands. You can tell where they are from anywhere on the map from the golden auras they give off when entrenched with the archipelago’s thick fog. They come laden with high-end treasures that you could use back in your own Cookie Kingdom… as long as you have a Duskgloom Key to open it.

There’s a few places to find ‘em, like events and stuff and the Gallery found in your Trade Harbor. Those are free for anyone. For the time being, however, unscrupulous merchants can and will sell you a few with a whole lotta other stuff in a bundle if you’re willing to fork over some of your own real money.
